How to Choose a 55mm 5-Gallon Water Bottle Cap: Buyer Checklist

A buyer checklist for 55mm 5-gallon water bottle caps: neck fit, SGS/FDA and FSSC 22000 documents, sealing tests you can run, cap types and lead times. Request samples from Boguan.

A cap that fits on day one but leaks in the warehouse is one of the most expensive surprises in bottled water production. The wrong 55mm cap can mean wet cartons, lost product, customer complaints and emergency re-orders. This guide walks through the checks that help bottling plants choose a 5-gallon water bottle cap that seals reliably - and how to verify it before committing to bulk.
1. Start With Your Bottle Neck, Not the Cap
For standard 5-gallon water bottles, 55mm caps are the common closure. But not every 55mm cap seals the same way, because blow-molded PC bottles often have slightly uneven neck surfaces, rough edges or small molding marks. Before choosing a cap, check:
  • Neck dimensions of your actual bottles (not just the bottle supplier's drawing)
  • Whether the neck surface is smooth or shows molding irregularities
  • Whether the cap stays tight after repeated handling and dispenser installation
Ask for samples and test them on your own bottles - not on the supplier's reference bottle. Sample preparation takes only 3 days, so a compatibility check can fit into your normal planning.
2. Verify Food-Grade Material With Documents
Drinking water caps should be made from food-grade PP. Ask for more than a statement: request the actual test documentation.
  • SGS/FDA test report with US FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and 177.2600 test items marked Pass (Boguan holds a 2025 report for 55mm water bottle caps)
  • Contact-material test results for extractable, xylene soluble and total extractives - all reported as Pass in Boguan's 2026 SGS/FDA report for non-spill caps
  • FSSC 22000 food safety management certification covering the production facility
Check that the report matches your product: cap type, material and test date. A report for a different closure tells you little about the caps you will receive.
3. Test Sealing Performance Yourself
Your filling line is the only lab that matters. A simple incoming test:
  1. Fill 5-10 bottles from your normal production and apply the caps with your capping equipment.
  1. Lay the bottles on their side and check after 24 hours for any seepage around the cap.
  1. Drop one bottle from normal handling height and re-check the seal.
  1. Install a cap on a dispenser and remove it - it should open cleanly, without fragments.
4. Choose the Right Cap Type for Your Route
  • 55mm Blue Snap-On Cap: standard sealing for everyday bottled water supply
  • 55mm 13g Cap: a defined weight option for buyers who compare caps by gram weight
  • 55mm Leak-Proof Cap: for longer transport routes and delivery routes with more handling
  • 55mm Crystal Cap: petal-opening design that helps reduce plastic debris and keep the inner plug out of the water - useful for brands working to cut complaints
5. Confirm OEM and Supply Details Before Ordering
Cap colors, logo printing, labels and custom cartons all affect cost and schedule. Freeze these details at the sample stage so production is not blocked later. Standard lead time: samples in 3 days, bulk production in 15-25 days after order confirmation, with shipping time additional.
Quick Checklist Before You Order
  • Bottle neck dimensions measured on your own bottles
  • Cap samples tested on your line and your bottles
  • SGS/FDA report and FSSC 22000 certificate matching the product you buy
  • Cap type, color, printing and carton approved in writing
  • Delivery schedule aligned with your filling plan (3-day samples, 15-25 day production)
Send your bottle neck dimensions, cap type, quantity and destination country to Boguan for a quotation - and ask for samples so you can run this checklist on your own line.
